PATIO GARDEN – WEST SIMSBURY

This wooded property sits at the end of cul de sac in Simsbury. The owners love the outdoors and entertaining. We were charged with updating some of the existing features.

In the backyard, we replaced a large wooden deck that dominated the landscape with a bluestone patio and sitting wall. A Heritage River Birch was planted to provide a lower canopy than the surrounding trees, and Little Lime Hydrangea was planted as an informal hedge to provide privacy from the street.

The side entrance faces the street and abuts the patio and also needed a facelift. Here, we built a portico with a barrel ceiling and round supportive columns, supported by a larger porch area. Large bluestone slabs were installed for an elegant transition to the new patio. Hiding an existing bulkhead is a custom cedar trellis, covered with Clematis vines and underplanted with Oehme Variegated Palm Sedge and Dwarf Black Mondo Grass.

We replaced the existing front walkway with bluestone and an existed timber wall with natural stone, both matching the backyard patio materials, and lined the walk with Green Velvet Boxwood and Hosta. At the end of the walkway, we planted a grouping of Tuff Stuff Hydrangea, which despite the shade, bloom heartily each season.

Natural materials and informal design give this landscape a casually elegant feel that blends nicely with its woodland surroundings.
